OUAT in Wonderland 1×13 “And They Lived …” Recap

Spoilers Ahead

Happily Ever After.

If a series finale doesn’t end as beautifully as this one then it completely ruins the entire show. A special acknowledgment to writers and executive producers, Adam Horowitz, Edward Kitsis along with Jane Espenson, and Zack Estrin, for doing their characters and story justice with such an outstanding finale.

The episode opens up with Jafar and Amara completing the task to reverse the laws of magic – making someone fall in love, changing the past, and bringing someone back from the dead –. He compels Anastasia to believe she’s in love with him and poor Will watches them kiss and awkwardly if I may add. The Sultan tries to stop him from doing any more damage than he’s already done, and Jafar magically makes him accept him as a son. As the Sultan expresses wanting Jafar as a son – in at trance of course – Jafar kills him by making him feel the same thing he felt when he was being drowned. It’s really such a shame that his heart’s turned so cruel, even the one thing he wanted most couldn’t inspire him to leave his villainous ways.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×12 “To Catch A Thief” Recap

Spoilers Ahead

In flashbacks we learned that while his heart was still under Cora’s command Will was told to haunt and kill Alice, but she instead offers to steal his heart back thus freeing him from Cora’s control. Will then helps her find proof of Wonderland to show her father, and the two share drinks while talking about their plans and past.

Jafar tells Will that he’d change the laws of magic and bring Anastasia back from the dead if they let him win and releases him in order for him to tell Cyrus and Alice. Because the staff is Cyrus’ mother and other terrible things he’s capable of, he and Alice are evidently reluctant to return it and help him. Will takes it as they’re sleeping and during a conversation with Alice, he eventually walks away but still saves her when her life’s in danger. After realizing that everyone does indeed deserve a second chance, Alice and Cyrus decide to help Will in bringing Anastasia back and destroying Jafar. Cyrus serves as a distraction for Jafar while Alice frees the Sultan; however, even Amara in her human form is no match for his powers. Unfortunately during their battle, Jafar throws a glass into Cyrus’ heart and forces Amara to team up with him to complete the spell.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×11 “Heart of the Matter” Recap

Spoilers Ahead

This week’s episode of Once Upon A Time in Wonderland took an unexpected turn no one expected or wanted. If you’re still recovering from the tearjerker ending, then you’re not alone.

In flashbacks we learned that the throne didn’t exactly suit Ana as she imagined, and the moment she was about to run from it all to reunite with Will, Cora being a few steps ahead of her had already told Will she wasn’t coming and forced him to essentially give up his heart. If she had business cards they’d probably read “Cora Mills: Destroying Relationships 1 Heart at a Time. Call 1 (800) Love is Weakness for more information.” As Anastasia is told he is no longer waiting for her, she decides to follow in Cora’s footsteps and take magic lessons. Cora clearly enjoys ruining love stories for power doesn’t she? First Regina and Daniel though that was far more cruel, and now Anastasia and Will – the lady needs some serious parenting advice.

It was however, undoubtedly nice to have Barbara Hershey grace our television screens again as she’s an incredibly phenomenal actress who’s able to make us both love and hate Cora with every fiber of our beings, but let’s be real, the only reason I’m actually able to love her is because of Hershey’s impeccable performance. Momma Mills is a bit crazy.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×10 “Dirty Little Secrets” Recap

Spoilers Ahead

All this week’s episode did is leave me waiting for next week’s visit to Storybrooke and Barbara Hershey’s guest appearance.

Personal wishes aside, let’s talk this week’s heartbreakingly revealing episode. Cyrus’ mother, later revealed as Amara was badly burned and on her death bed until her boys, Cyrus primarily, decided to go against let’s call her the Ring girl number two’s (if you’re curious, I may or may not have screamed at the sight of it) word. After they stole the water and revived their mother she came after them and cursed them to be genies their entire lives; however, she said she’d undo the curse if the water was brought back by revealing that Amara is still alive. It seems this is why she wanted to bottles from Jafar in the first place, it’d certainly make sense. Now this is showdown that’s going to be great; however, given the history of parents on this show, a part of me is wondering whether or not she’d actually side with her boys – let’s hope she does.

Speaking of Jafar, he and the Jabberwocky, torture Knave and Anastasia until she makes all three of her wishes and sends Knave into Jafar’s possession.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×09 “Nothing to Fear” Recap

Spoilers Ahead

When we left our favorites in Wonderland, Will’s selfless decision to wish for Alice’s happiness turned him into the new genie and forced Cyrus and Alice to work closely with the Red Queen to find him before Jafar does.

Happily ever after can’t just be for us, it has to be for everyone, for all of wonderland.”

As the episode’s and show’s entire theme this particular quote was said remarkably by our beloved Alice and as far as plot twists and character development goes, this may have been the best episode yet.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×08 “Home” Recap

Spoilers ahead:

Flashbacks: This week’s flashbacks gave viewers a further glimpse into Cyrus and Alice’s relationship in the past. As they were stargazing and being adorable, Cyrus reveals that he wasn’t always a genie thus, justifying the notion that it’s something anyone can become. When they’re attacked by three men and Alice injures herself while fighting, Cyrus takes her the rabbit’s house where his wife tries to revive her. The rabbit tells Cyrus he needs to let Alice go, and he visits the caterpillar to ask for his assistance in disappearance. Cyrus later reveals an invisible house to Alice that they could call home and be together.

Modern Day: Alice and Knave continue on their pursuit to find Cyrus, but this time they also go searching for the rabbit. When they find the rabbit, he reveals the reason he told the Red Queen about Cyrus’ bottle is because she was holding his family hostage and he merely had no choice. Knave reveals that he may possibly know their location, and he takes them to the hut he and Anastasia used to live in where the rabbit is reunited with his family.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×07 “Bad Blood” Recap

Spoilers ahead:

It seems the one question that tends to pop up often in the OUAT world these days is: who’s really the worst parent of all?

Flashbacks: Right before Jafar’s mother dies, she tells him that his real father is actually alive, and as it turns out, he’s the Sultan. Jafar’s mother believed that when the Sultan saw his ring, he’d happily take him in because he’s family, but in reality, he cared very little for Jafar and more for his other son. Their final exchange before Jafar became powerful was of the Sultan trying to drown him to death. Who on earth could have the heart to drown a little kid?!

Modern Day: Jafar brings Alice’s father to Wonderland and at first, he refuses to cooperate because since he’s never given her the affection and respect she’s deserves, she wouldn’t forgive him. Jafar then locks him up and impersonates him in order to confront Alice. However, after spending some time with him and eventually escaping the dragon he’s summoned, Alice realizes he’s an impostor because he doesn’t say grace before their meal. This was undoubtedly a fantastic way to bring out the lie.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×06 “Who’s Alice?” Recap

Spoilers ahead:

Flashbacks: Alice goes home after Cyrus “dies” and it turns out her father has remarried, and his new wife has plans to send Alice away. Because Alice doesn’t accept the man they choose for her, they decide to send her into the madhouse where she remains locked up until her escape in the pilot.

Modern day: Jafar visits Bethlem Asylum with the rabbit and attempts to pick Dr. Lydgate’s brain about Alice’s time in captivity. Meanwhile, Alice goes into the “Black Forest” and later ends up in “Borogrove” where the Carpenter and the power of the plants possess her with false happiness. Wonderland is even more peculiar than Neverland or are they both equally bizarre? Luckily, Knave finds her, and with constant persuasion, he ends up convincing her to want to leave as one can only leave by choice. It’s nice to see the dynamic duo back in action again. Knalice is what a fantastic friendship looks like, folks.

Knave later confesses that he still hasn’t placed his heart back into his body because he’s still broken from Anastasia’s betrayal. Could Red Knave ever reunite again? Will he be able to forgive her? She did save his life and now that he’s aware, maybe he’ll be more willing in the long run.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×05 “Heart of Stone” Recap

Spoilers ahead:

Tonight’s episode proved that Alice is in fact purest at heart and villains will do anything in their power to destroy the lives of heroes (including torturing a poor rabbit). Jafar’s the worst but there still seems to be hope for the Red Queen’s redemption.

Flashbacks: Anastasia’s mother confronts the duo right before their trip to Wonderland and expresses her disappointments. It always comes as a shock when mothers are incredibly harsh towards their children, but she doesn’t even bother wording any of her concerns kindly. “The only way you’ll be coming back inside my house is to empty my chamber pot. Off with you then. At least I have your sisters.” It’s heartbreaking that people like this actually exist in the world. Who let her be a mother? Will fights against her cruelty by reassuring Anastasia that a life with him will be better. “Don’t listen to her. I’ll build us a life if I have to, brick by brick. I love you for who you truly are, not who I want you to be.“ That, dears is what we’d call true love. Will illustrates that his love is unwavering and that he’ll do anything for her happiness. Unfortunately their attempt to fit in with royals doesn’t go as planned and Anastasia betrays Will once she’s  proposed to by the King and offered a throne. It’s quite a shame what people will do to be on top.

Modern Day: Alice and The Red Queen team up to retrieve magical dust that’ll protect against dark magic like Jafar’s. On their quest Alice must walk an unseen path since she’s the purest in heart; however, she falls into a cave and confronts herself? A tad too creepy but also somewhat pretty cool. Who wouldn’t want to confront their younger selves? Red Queen later ends up in the cave as well and little Alice tells modern day Alice to kill her because she cannot be trusted. Because Alice doesn’t kill her, she proves she’s the purest in heart and little Alice becomes the magical dust they’ve been searching for. Sadly, Red Queen doesn’t honor their agreement and she takes the dust without revealing Cyrus’ whereabouts. What she doesn’t realize however is that Alice has taken a bit of dust for herself and with it she finds Cyrus’ location.

OUAT in Wonderland 1×04 “The Serpent” Recap

Spoilers ahead:

1 wish down, 2 to go. When will she make them? Will she save them until she has rescued Cyrus in order make Knave human again?! It’s a shame that he’s literally motionless as he and Alice were an epic duo.

Jafar, like most villains started out despising the fact that in order to be powerful, innocent people must suffer. Ultimately, just as many noted villains, he wasn’t born evil, he was made. His entire reasoning behind gaining power was to get revenge on his father. He was so distraught as a child that he knew what revenge was and he wanted it. Now that’s tragic.

In modern day, collectors are after Knave and Alice – he gets captured, she escapes. He and Anastasia are reunited in a not so pleasant way. Truthfully we are a bit disappointed she didn’t try to save him. How could a simple “I can’t” alter someone’s mind so drastically? Clearly his love for her was deeper than hers as Lizard clarified, it truly changed him afterwards. His heartbreak definitely still lingers in him. Although there are signs of redemption, are there any of a reunion? Based solely after tonight’s episode, it seems like a no.
