The Act of Shipping and Civil Discourse

The Act of Shipping and Civil Discourse

On this week’s episode of Marvelous Geeks, Morgan McNair and I (Gissane Sophia) are back to discuss the act of shipping and civil discourse when you don’t agree with another one’s choice. The conversation features different ships from shows like One Tree Hill, Jane the Virgin, Harry Potter, and more. We discuss what it means to be a fan and distinguishing between something that isn’t written well vs. something that doesn’t resonate with us. And finally, in the midst of all this conversation carries to note how much we dislike what’s happening with writing nowadays and the decision to subvert expectations. This is a podcast episode that could go on and on because the topics up to debate are ones that are constantly being had amongst all sorts of fandoms.

25 Inimitable Men 10/25
Nathan Scott (One Tree Hill)

perf

When One Tree Hill first aired, did anyone expect Nathan Scott to go through the most prodigious growth as a character? I certainly didn’t. But by season two, I was left pleasantly surprised, and anything after that, I knew that whatever challenge he faced, he’d conquer it with a selfless mindset and admirable strength. As a boy who was incredibly damaged by his abusive upbringing, it was tough to imagine just how honorable, he’d turn out to be. Often times in the world of television, when we’re introduced to a man with the type of past Nathan’s endured, he’s already at a place of innate goodness, but with Nathan Scott, we were introduced to an unkind, troubled teenager who was headed down the wrong path. Nathan’s growth served as ultimate proof that love, and only love can pull the darkness out of someone and engulf them with a plethora of light. Nathan Scott is the prime example of a father, a husband, a friend, and an honorable, wonderfully complex, inimitable soul.

25 Nearest and Dearest 11/25
Brooke Davis and Haley James Scott (One Tree Hill)

brooke-and-haley

One Tree Hill was the very first show I watched from beginning to end as it aired, and for that reason, plus countless others, it will always have a place in my heart. And perhaps, my favorite part about One Tree Hill is the friendship which grew from indifference into a sisterhood. A friendship which was essentially unlikely, but it was everything that was needed to go through life. Brooke Davis and Haley James Scott were two of the most passionate, loyal souls in Tree Hill — it felt right that they’d become the best of friends. It felt right that they’d go through life together. The best of friends laugh together, cry together, fight together, stick together, and most importantly grow together. And what’s always appealed most to me is the fact that they gave to each other endlessly without ever expecting anything in return.

25 Love Stories 11/25
Clay Evans and Quinn James (One Tree Hill)

One Tree Hill featured some of the most ridiculously dramatic storylines and while I’ve rolled my eyes plenty of times during all my nine years as a fan, Mark Schwahn is still one of the most admirable writers when it comes to characters and romances. Clay Evans and Quinn James are the third pairing from the series that have secured a spot on this list with their charming story. It’s difficult to imagine what the series used to be like without their characters let alone their interactions with one another. I’m not sure who loves them more, the audience or Robert Buckley and Shantel VanSanten who to this day continue to pay homage to them in the sweetest ways. |xOne Tree Hill told stories in the most intense fashion sometimes, but at the end of the day, the love stories always have a unique beginning and a gorgeous impact on both characters.

25 Love Stories 8/25
Julian Baker and Brooke Davis (One Tree Hill)

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 7.08.22 PM

There’s treasure in this relationship — something unexplainably beautiful that’s been waiting to be found for years and years. I didn’t really have any favorite characters on One Tree Hill until about season two and that’s when Brooke Davis became the one person whose happiness I wanted most. I’ll save talking about her growth for when it’s time to do individual characters, but life screwed her over and the world misunderstood her most. Brooke Davis has always been more than a pretty face, she’s more than just a pretentious cheerleader: she’s ambitious and compassionate in ways so inspiring, the man who stood by her side had to be incomparable. It wasn’t until Julian began showing just how much he cares to know more about her story, where I began to actively root for them. At the end of the day, no man has ever come close to truly deserving Brooke Davis. It’s key to note that at the end of the day, the greatest relationships are the ones that effortlessly heal all wounds while simultaneously challenging their partners in all the best ways. Love’s an outrageous mess wrapped beautifully in a bow of infinite possibilities: a safe place where both strengths and vulnerabilities are welcomed. It’s a whirlwind of emotions and hard work, but it’s the boldest risk that’s taken day by day with an admirable openness and unwavering adoration.

25 Love Stories 4/25
Nathan Scott and Haley James (One Tree Hill)

Screen Shot 2015-10-10 at 7.09.53 PM

As far back as I can remember, watching Nathan Scott and Haley James fall in love was probably the first time I really began actively shipping something. The good old days when the word wasn’t even invented yet. Sure there’re couples I adored before them, but they ended up being the longest journey I followed, and probably the sweetest depiction of the cliché bad boy + good girl storyline. A lot can happen in a small town like Tree Hill, but it was always nice to have Nathan and Haley as shining examples of love that conquers. Even when they were apart, you always knew that they couldn’t adore anyone else the way they did each other — even when their path appeared to be too dark, you never doubted that they’d find the light back to each other. Always and forever wasn’t just a saying, it was their promise.

Episode: 3×15 Just Watch the Fireworks”

“The important thing is not to be bitter over life’s disappointments. Learn to let go of the past … and recognize that everyday won’t be sunny. And when you find yourself lost in the darkness and despair … remember it’s only in the black of night you can see the stars, and those stars will lead you back home. So don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to stumble, to fall, cause most of the time the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. Maybe you’ll get everything you wish for … Maybe you’ll get more than you ever could have imagined … Who knows where life will take you. The road is long and in the end … the journey is the destination”

TV Series: One Tree Hill
Episode: “Pictures of You”

Today’s post will be taking it back to one of the most powerful TV episodes of 2007 that promoted self-love. We all have a certain image of ourselves in our minds, and for some of us, it’s not a great one. As human beings, we all deserve a positive self image of ourselves. We deserve to believe in the greatness that’s in store for us. We deserve to follow our dreams. We deserve to be seen the way we want the world to see us.

If you were a fan of the show, re-watch this episode, if you weren’t, give it a go and maybe it’ll inspire you, too.

What you do matters
TV Series: One Tree Hill

There comes a point in each of our lives where we question what we’re doing. And often times, it forces us to believe that if we aren’t where we want to be, then we’re doing something wrong, it’s pointless, and we’re stuck forever. This has always been one of our favorite quotes from One Tree Hill and while we all stumble in our lives daily, it’s important to remind ourselves that at this very moment, we are where we’re meant to be.

Every step you make towards reaching your dream matters. Every single person you smile at makes a difference in their lives. Whatever it is, there’s nothing in our lives that’s meaningless. So the next time you question yourself and whether you’re at the right place, remember that everything you’re doing is important. Take steps in the right direction. Help people. Love people. Be a friend to all because by doing so, you’ll be someone who’s helped shape lives – if you ask us, there’s nothing more important than that. Your dreams are attainable, every thing you do is a stepping stone. Don’t ever for a second allow yourself to believe that you’re in any way a failure.
