Song: “American Secrets”
Album: The Way It Was
We all have a few songs that have been there for us in our darkest hours. Songs that have made us feel less alone, less anxious, less overwhelmed, less shattered. Songs that have somehow made us forget why we were upset in the first place. The funny thing about music is that it doesn’t always make sense why something means so much to us. The lyrics don’t always have to match our life to the t. And that’s the case with Parachute’s “American Secrets”.
“American Secrets” is the song that’d manage to put my stressed, overwhelmed with finals self to sleep at nights. And today, as silly as it sounds, it’s still the song I immediately put on when a full moon has snuck its way right outside the window of my bed. It wasn’t always easy to enjoy pretty scenery for me when I was stressed with school, but “American Secrets” made it easier. I wish I could explain why, but it’s simply one of those things that I have yet to figure out. “American Secrets” is the song that effortlessly reminds me that ‘this too shall pass’ and for that, I’m grateful. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of the beautiful seemingly endless summers I spent back home in our small town. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of the dreams that I’ll never give up on no matter how far I run from them. I don’t know. All I know is that it’s a song I will cherish til I’m old and grey.
At this point I’ve seen Parachute live too many times to count, but I had somehow always missed the live performance of “American Secrets” until last Friday, the 22nd of April. And all I can say is there were tears.
And my Twitter is proof of my meltdown. We’ve all been there, right?
It wasn’t the entire version, but it was just as immaculate as I imagined it’d be. And the reality is, if you’ve never seen your favorite band perform your favorite song, you must add it onto your bucket list. You must. That’s the point of this entire post. I’ve seen a lot of my favorite songs performed live. I’ve had some of the most epic dance parties with some of my favorite people. But we have our favorite songs and then we have the songs that have changed our lives. It’s easy to feel alone in a crowded room. I’m certain there’s not a single soul in the world that’s never experienced that feeling. Thereby, there’s something indescribably liberating and profound about watching your favorite song performed in all its raw, heartfelt glory. It does help that Will Anderson is one of the best live performers out there, but still, I’m a firm believer in the fact that this is an experience you’re bound to carry with you forever. (Also, listen to Parachute, friends. They’re a gift to the music world.) This is the kind of experience where for a moment, you feel less alone, more understood, more free. Though life isn’t bad, it isn’t always exciting. Sometimes our day jobs stress us out, roadblocks burden us, stress captivates us, etc. But this is an experience where for a moment, nothing else matters. For a moment, it’s just you and a song that has touched parts of your soul where treasure’s found.
This is just one of few songs that’s had such an impact in my life, what are some of yours? Let’s talk music!
