25 Love Stories 25/25
Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is probably the only series where a fandom ship name is avidly used in canon as well. So who are we to deny the greatness and beauty of FitzSimmons — two souls who just can’t be apart even when they’re not entirely sure what’s going on between with them. From the very first episode you knew there’d be something between them. You knew their bond was special and in every opportunity the series could find, it showcased that the audience was always right. Whether or not we all prefer them is a different story, but the fact of the matter is, there’s always been something there. Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons are the best of friends, they’re partners, they’re great on their own, but together they’re unstoppable, and these are the stories that often leave a lasting impression.

The most interesting thing about FitzSimmons is the fact that even if they don’t end up together romantically, they still cannot be without one another — they’re so profoundly connected that it’d be difficult to be in a partnership with someone else. They know each other so well, they know what the other would say. And perhaps that’s a little cliché, but at the end of the day, you not only end up resembling your best friend, you become them in ways. Sometimes, one party realizes they’ve fallen before the other. Sometimes, you lose each other in agonizingly daunting ways and the incompleteness becomes unbearable. Whatever way you look at it, it’s sweet — in my honest opinion, every woman deserves a man like Fitz who’d stop at nothing to keep them safe, a man who’d remember every little detail, and a man who’d see their partner as the person who carries the world’s beauty within them. The way FitzSimmons know one another is in ways no one ever could, and while someone can try, I personally don’t think they could get as close — because for Fitz and Simmons, sometimes they don’t even need words to express the feelings deep within. Sometimes their actions tell the bigger story and sometimes, it’s the fact that they’ve come so far, they understand one another in a deeply unimaginable way. For me personally, it was seeing Fitz’s catastrophic reaction to Jemma jumping off the plane that did it. In that moment it was clear that this man would lose it all if anything happened to her, and as the seasons progressed, it’s exactly what was illuminated. Fitz isn’t strong enough to live in a world where she doesn’t exist, and the fact that he chooses to admit that is admirable. At times, men don’t bare it all because they believe it’s a sign of weakness, but for Fitz, he credits Jemma for everything — they both have their own special set of skills, but he sees as her smarter, braver, bolder, and better. He’s not afraid to reveal his vulnerabilities to her because she’s the only one who’d understand it all. He’s not afraid to admit that he’s weak without her and there’s bravery in that. There’s bravery in the fact that he chooses to be selfless for her because his love runs deeper than what science can ever explain.

It took Jemma a bit longer to realize she has feelings for him, but the reality is, that happens. And once she admitted to it, once she let herself feel, she knew in her heart she’d be safe and protected. She knew he’d never give up on her. She knew he’d always be there for her. And just like that, she’d be there for him. The idea of losing him became unbearable. It became agonizing. We discussed the FitzSimmons kiss not too long ago for our Most Exquisite TV Moment segment, but it feels appropriate enough to bring it back into this post. After all, the first kiss is always special.

“The long awaited FitzSimmons confrontation on Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. was nothing as I’d ever expected — it was better, much, much better. I always imagined that the first time Fitz and Simmons kissed would be adorably awkward, but the fact that it was filled with a whirlwind of complex emotions and fired with an inability to let go of each other said so much more about how far they’ve come. Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge were at their best — the two have always been excellent scene partners, but the events of this week have given them the opportunities to dig deep into their emotions in order to pour out something evocative. I cannot stress the significance of honesty throughout the entire scene — you could feel the pain and confusion they were both in, but you could also feel the intense adoration. The relationship between FitzSimmons is complicated, but it’s essentially what makes it so beautiful, they’re not just best friends, they’re two people who cannot live without one another, and the conundrums they’re now facing are merely tests that’ll prove they need each other in ways they cannot even imagine. This was perhaps the most raw and compelling declaration of love we’ve ever seen on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

I’m not going to lie and say that FitzSimmons were always meant to be on this list, they’d probably be a bit lower not because they aren’t completely and utterly adorable, but because I needed something to revolutionize this idea that love makes people grow for the better. It’s what I love most about couples. Yes, FitzSimmons always challenged one another fantastically, but the compelling change in their relationship happened when Simmons was rescued. Fitz is a different man now — he’s determined, he’s bold, he’s brave, and while he’s still adorably charming, he’s proven that this is anything but a puppy dog crush — this is love. He’d do anything for Jemma and that includes selflessly choosing to reunite her with another man she’s fallen for. He’s now carrying himself with the bravado that’s always been waiting to burst from within and it’s downright perfect. For a while, it was clear people took advantage of Fitz — he was the nice kid that had a crush on his best friend, but he’s different now, he’s a man with a gorgeous childlike faith in his best friend. Jemma’s his world, and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for her.

We don’t know what’ll happen to FitzSimmons when the series resumes, but we left off with Fitz comforting Simmons in what’ll surely be a dark time. What we know for sure however, is that both Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons would go to the ends of the earth for each other. They care so deeply about one another that I’m not even sure they’ve figured it all out yet — there are no words they can use to properly express the greatness in their partnership. There are no words they can use to describe how much they care. At the end of the day, they’ll always need each other, they’ll always care for each other, and they’ll always treasure each other in ways no one else can. It’s impossible to be without each other — they’re one, life’s an adventure they must embark on together because the world’s more beautiful that way. There’s more greatness, serenity, and adoration in the life when they’re taking it on together. They’re equals in inexpressible ways and that fortifies the love between them gorgeously.
